StepChange Debt Charity Ireland launches November 16th

16 November 2015

StepChange Debt Charity Ireland will launch its telephone advice service, offering free and independent help for anyone struggling with debt problems, on Monday, November 16th.

The charity will offer a range of solutions to help people deal with their whole debt problem, secured and unsecured, including informal repayment plans, mortgage restructuring and insolvency.

The charity is urging anyone who is struggling with debt to contact its free-phone helpline – 1 800 937 435 - which will be open 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Mike O’Connor, Chief Executive of StepChange Debt Charity, said:

“We know that dealing with debt is rarely just a financial problem; it can impact on so many different areas of people’s lives. It can affect their physical and mental health, their home-life, their work-life and their relationships with friends and family.

“Our advice will be based on what’s best for the people who need our help. This means, wherever possible, keeping people in their homes, while providing an affordable and sustainable way to tackle their whole debt problem.

“Debt advice can make an incredible difference to people’s lives, by helping them to regain their financial footing and sleep better at night. I urge anyone who is worried about their debts to pick up the phone and speak to one of our advisors.”

Our advice

Our advisers will help people who contact us to complete a Standard Financial Statement (SFS) and based on this detailed assessment of the person’s finances, they will propose what we believe to be the best way forward.

Once a course of action has been agreed with the client, we will, where appropriate, advise their creditors of the situation and negotiate new payment arrangements. Where we recommend a repayment option, our aim will be to create affordable and sustainable solutions.

Where reduced payments, restructuring or other options aren’t appropriate, and when it’s the right advice for a person, we will recommend insolvency solutions and refer them to a Personal Insolvency Practitioner.
